Graduated 1979 Tel-Aviv University School of Medicine .Following residencies in Internal Medicine and Cardiology trained in 3 US fellowships : Cardiovascular Pathology , University of Minnesota[1983- 1984], Cardiology, University of Miami [1986-1989], Interventional Cardiology, VCU/Medical College of Virginia[1989-1990].In 2001 attained Professor of Medicine and in 2002 also Professor of Pathology. Chief, Division of Cardiology, VA MC, Asheville, NC, 2010-2021.Continue to carry a rank of Professor of Medicine at Duke Universit School Medicine. Inventor of debulking techniques for plaque and thrombus extraction. Authored the chapters on " Laser" & “The thrombus containing lesion” in multiple editions of the Textbook of Interventional Cardiology [Topol,Teirstein eds.]. Professor Topaz is a world authority on cardiovascular lasers & anatomic vasculature, pioneering contemporary coronary lasing techniques and the discoverer [2010] of an aortic branch vessel variant unknown to science previously. Participated in NIH and NSF Special Study Sections; Fellow of the American College of Cardiology;American College of Physicians ;Society Cardiac Angiography & Interventions: American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery; Society of Vascular Medicine; Member of numerous other cardiovascular organizations. Lectured, performed and proctored many live complex coronary and peripheral interventions globally. From 1998-2005 served as NA Editor-in-Chief , of Journal Laser in Medical Science. Recipient of NIH National Research Service Award; Winthrop interventional Cardiology award & several teaching awards. Published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles & abstracts,contributed 33 book chapters, initiated & edited 3 major cardiovascular textbooks : 1] “Lasers in Cardiovascular interventions” [Springer,2016]; 2] “ Cardiovascular Thrombus:from pathology and clinical presentations to imaging, pharmacotherapy and interventions”[Elsevier,2018] ;3] “Debulking strategies in cardiovascular diseases- between the rock and the heart” [Elsevier,2022]. He is a reviewer and editorial board member of 18 peer-reviewed journals.
